D&D at Winter Fantasy

Hi folks,

The holidays have ended, and the dark days of winter are still upon us. What's a gamer to do?

Thankfully, Winter Fantasy is almost here, providing a long, glorious weekend of gaming to help see us through! Taking place January 24th-27th in Fort Wayne, Indiana, this is the premier winter convention for Dungeons & Dragons.

The fine folks at Baldman Games continue to run Winter Fantasy, and have updated the official site with the latest news and events taking place at the convention. So just what's in store for D&D at the show? Let's take a look:

Exclusive First Looks

Winter Fantasy attendees look forward to an early look at what's taking place with D&D. This year, we're excited to offer the very first public playtest of A0: Danger at Darkshelf Quarry, a brand new prequel adventure written by Skip Williams, which debuts with June's Against the Slave Lords release.

In addition, we'll also be offering players an exclusive preview of a D&D Next class that has not yet appeared in the D&D Next public playtest. Playing either Danger at Darkshelf Quarry or The Steading of the Hill Giant Chief (both described below) allow you to try out this new class before it appears online in the D&D Next public playtest. That's all we'll say for now, but look for further information in Mike Mearls's Legends & Lore column on January 22!

Incredible Gaming Opportunities

Against the Slave Lords

By now, you've likely seen the upcoming release of the Against the Slave Lords in our product catalog, compiling the classic A-series of adventures (originally played as Gen Con XIII's open tournament). Against the Slave Lords also includes the all-new prequel adventure, A0: Danger at Darkshelf Quarry, which will be available for playtesting at Winter Fantasy:

Darkshelf Quarry holds more than limestone and granite. Whispered rumors abound that the quarry’s dwarf overseer isn’t really a dwarf at all, and that he makes most of his money selling slaves, not stone. Investigation is the only way to learn the truth, but beware! The quarry is well defended, and danger lurks within its dark tunnels and hidden chambers.

Each slot runs 2 hours, and makes use of D&D Next playtest rules. Pre-generated characters are provided.

The Steading of the Hill Giant Chief

In addition, another classic adventure awaits. The very first adventure module published by TSR, G1: The Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, will be available for play using the D&D Next rules:

Giants have been raiding the lands in large groups. Destruction and death have been laid heavily upon the land. Your band of adventurers has been gathered from local villages to deal with this problem. Glory, gold, and fame await!

We recommend this adventure only for players who have had some experience with the D&D Next playtest. In your raid against Chief Nosnra (and his gathered celebration), you’ll be playing a 9th level pre-generated character.

Ongoing Campaigns

Beyond these D&D Next adventures, Winter Fantasy also plays host to a number of Living Forgotten Realms scenarios, including this year's 2-round Battle Interactive: Home's Last Light. And for players who prefer grittier times in the world of Dark Sun, the Ashes of Athas campaign reaches its epic conclusion in its own Battle Interactive: Dust to Dust.

For further details on these, and all other adventures taking place at Winter Fantasy, be sure to consult the official site.

Special Guests

As in years past, Winter Fantasy offers you the chance to meet with members of the D&D team in addition to playing through the latest Dungeons & Dragons offerings. This year's guests include:

  • Mike Mearls (Senior Manager D&D R&D)
  • Greg Bilsland (D&D Producer)
  • Chris Tulach (D&D Organized PlayProgram Manager)
  • Chris Lindsey (D&D Brand Team)

For those who can't make it to the show, be sure to follow the D&D Twitter channel and Facebook page. And for those of you attending—we look forward to seeing you there!
