The Lich-Queen's Beloved, Session 5

G rab a virtual seat as members of the D&D R&D team play through The Lich-Queen's Beloved. High-level play is definitely a focus, as the team will be using 17th level characters.

The Lich-Queen's Beloved originally appeared in Dungeon #100, as the climax of an Incursion campaign centered around a githyanki invasion (later adapted in Dungeon #191). In this adventure, the heroes invade Susurrus, the palace of the githyanki lich-queen, and attempt to end Vlaakith’s reign forever. The adventure begins when Zetch’r’r, a githyanki warlord, petitions the heroes to confront and destroy Vlaakith. However, the lich-queen’s spies know of Zetch’r’r’s treachery and are preparing to deal with him and the PCs.

R&D will be using the very latest D&D Next playtest rules. So sit back and watch the action unfold!

Wish I had this kind of job. Must be one of the better benefits of working at Wizards. "Hey guys, we need to go playtest...why don't we broadcast it as well and subject the internet to our shenanigans?" "Capital idea, old sport!"

Really excited for the new edition, it seems that Blamo the fighter looks very weak, and doesn't do much but swing and do 15 damage at most. They don't mark in 5th? Why play a fighter?

??? Have you watched the other podcasts? The fighter is one of the most powerful classes right now. He gets 3 attacks a turn and can crit on an 18 or better and get a side benefit on top of it! Also. Indomitably. I shouldn't need to say anything more. Better Diamond Soul for the Fighter a level earlier than the Monk. Anyway, compare Blamo's damage output to that of the Cleric, give yourself a frame of reference. I would also watch the earlier podcasts of this adventure and note MC Killsalot, he uses the same fighter build and was doing some ridiculous stuff. Sorry for getting all hyper, not trying to be mean, I am just passionate.

Thankfully, marking seems to have gone away in Next. I say that only because some of the characters in the campaigns I am in found ways to abuse that mechanic terribly. Next doesn't use a lot of 4e mechanics, but still is a lot of fun to play and run. Then again, I've been playing since 1e, so the fact that Next feels, to me and my group, like older editions, is a good thing. Your milage may vary.

There is a marking mechanic in the Tactical Warrior feat.
