Monster Manual Update
Logan Bonner

This article series revisits monsters from the Monster Manual, providing them with additional background and story. In addition, the articles present the monsters in the revised statistics block format that first appeared widely in Monster Manual 3. The monsters have had some minor updates to powers and to some of their statistics, including attack, damage, and defense values. These changes in statistics generally reflect the updates that appear on page 7 in the Dungeon Master’s Guide rules update. This iteration of the article includes Choker, Satyr, and Shambling Mound.

A choker is ideally suited to hunting in the Under- dark, preying on intelligent creatures of significant size. Its undulating, fluid body has a cartilaginous frame that allows its limbs to flex and coil so the creature can squeeze into small spaces and hide easily.

Satyrs hail from the Feywild but travel to the world to sate their curiosity. Every new experience fills a satyr with a sense of wonder, and constantly seeking out the next big thing can get one into trouble.

Shambling Mound

Heaps of muck and vegetation can be found all over in a swamp, and any one of them could be a shambling mound. The creatures are especially difficult to detect since they spend much of their time in a sort of dormancy or hibernation.
