The letter L!ast week I had a lot of fun suiting guys up with Gigantiform thanks to Sovereigns of Lost Alara. I received a ton of positive feedback and strong suggestions for the deck. If you're looking to build the deck on a higher budget, I would update the mana base and find room for Uril, the Miststalker, Birds of Paradise, and Noble Hierarch.

This week I'd like to try out a new Standard deck. I was playing some games in the tournament practice room when a new idea killed me out of nowhere. I had taken 1 damage from a fetch land and was happily beating my opponent into oblivion. He had cast a Font of Mythos a turn earlier, and I seemed to have solid control over the game. I drew my two cards from the Font and then drew for my turn. My opponent didn't let me get to my precombat main phase, though—he cast Runeflare Trap, then cast Twincast targetting the big spell. I took 16, and a Lightning Bolt finished me off. I started asking him about the deck, and he gladly explained how it worked. This week I'd like to talk about this deck in today's Standard.

I'll start by explaining the card choices.

Runeflare Trap: This is how we kill our opponent. Doming your opponent for 20 damage is not a difficult endeavor.

Twincast: Copying a Runeflare Trap or a Time Warp is usually a game winner.

Howling Mine: We want our Runeflare Traps to be huge. This is a start.

Font of Mythos: Font of Mythos is huge here. One Font satisfies the trap condition of Runeflare Trap all by itself.

Lightning Bolt: I cannot think of a reasonable excuse to not play this in a deck with red mana.

Burst Lightning: I really wish I could play eight Lightning Bolt, but Zendikar was kind enough to give us a really solid alternative.

Ponder: Ponder is a fine card selection tool when you need a Time Warp or Runeflare Trap in a pinch.

Time Warp: I want to make myself perfectly clear to those of you who have not had the chance to cast a Time Warp with a Howling Mine and Font of Mythos in play: This card is absolutely necessary to the archetype.

Into the Roil: Stunting an opponent's development, cantripping, and making Runeflare Trap bigger are all good reasons to play Into the Roil.

Here's the deck in its final form:

This deck did very well at States in Connecticut, but Baneslayer Angel and Day of Judgment put it outside our budget. I found a list online and figured you guys may want to see a fun and interesting new Standard deck.

Mono-White Enchantress
Standard

This is a stock list. My opponent's list had some different card choices; Guardian Seraph, for example, makes an appearance.

I keep Terramorphic Expanse, Island, Mountain, Howling Mine, Into the Roil, Font of Mythos, and Lightning Bolt on the draw. My opponent plays a Plains and passes the turn. I draw another Island, play my Terramorphic Expanse, and pass the turn. My opponent plays another land and passes. and I crack my Terramorphic Expanse for a Mountain on his end step. I draw a Runeflare Trap, play my land, cast Howling Mine, and pass the turn. My opponent draws his two cards and casts a Mesa Enchantress before passing the turn. I draw a Twincast and another Island, play my land, and pass the the turn. My opponent plays a Guardian Seraph and passes, and I cast Lightning Bolt targetting him on his end step. I draw another Font of Mythos and a land, play my land, cast Font of Mythos, and pass the turn. My opponent draws a ton of cards, casts Oblivion Ring on my Font of Mythos, cast a Luminarch Ascension, and passes the turn. I draw another Runeflare Trap and a land, play my land, cast Time Warp, and take another turn. During my upkeep I cast Into the Roil on the Oblivion Ring. I draw two Ponder and two land, play a land, and pass the turn. After my opponent draws four cards, I have two Runeflare Traps and a Twincast, which is plenty to finish him off, even through two Harm's Way.

Sideboarding: -1 Volcanic Fallout, -2 Burst Lightning, +3 Negate

I keep Island, Howling Mine, Lightning Bolt, Into the Roil, Into the Roil, Burst Lightning, and Negate. My opponent plays a land and passes the turn. I draw another Lightning Bolt, play my Island, and pass the turn back. My opponent plays a second land and casts Luminarch Ascension. Things get awkward when I don't draw a second land on turn two. I don't make my second land drop until the fifth turn, and I get beat down by Guardian Seraph and a good number of 4/4 Angel tokens. I should probably mulligan opening hands like this. One land and I stick a turn two Howling Mine, though. What can I say? Sometimes I'm a donkey.

I keep Mountain, Mountain, Island, Island, Lightning Bolt, Howling Mine, and Runeflare Trap on the play. I play my land and pass, and my opponent does the same. I draw another Lightning Bolt, cast my Howling Mine, and pass the turn. My opponent casts a Luminarch Ascension again. I draw another Runeflare Trap, play my land, and pass the turn. My opponent plays his land and cast a Mesa Enchantress before passing the turn. I aim both Lightning Bolts at his face and bring him to 14. I draw Ponder and a land, play a land, and pass the turn. My opponent draws two cards and casts Oblivion Ring. He draws the extra card off his Enchantress, and I get to fire both Traps at his face for lethal damage.

I keep Island, Island, Howling Mine, Lightning Bolt, Font of Mythos, Time Warp, and Twincast on the play. I play my land and pass the turn, and my opponent plays a Forest and passes back. I draw another Howling Mine, play my land, cast a Howling Mine, and pass the turn. My opponent casts a Nissa's Chosen and passes the turn. I draw two Mountains, play one of them, Lightning Bolt the Chosen, cast the other Howling Mine, and pass the turn. My opponent casts an Elvish Archdruid and passes the turn. I draw Burst Lightning, Island, and another Howling Mine. I play my land, cast Burst Lightning targeting the Archdruid, cast the third Howling Mine, and pass the turn. My opponent casts Garruk Wildspeaker, makes a 3/3 Beast token, and passes the turn. I draw another Time Warp and some other cards, play my land, cast Time Warp, and retake my turn. I draw a Runeflare Trap and some other cards and go for another Warp. I draw another Runeflare Trap this time, cast the Font of Mythos, and pass the turn. My opponent draws six cards, and I fire off two Runeflare traps for lethal damage.

Sideboarding: -3 Ponder, -4 Into the Roil, +4 Pyroclasm, +2 Flashfreeze, +1 Volcanic Fallout

I mulligan into Mountain, Terramorphic Expanse, Terramorphic Expanse, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Bolt, and Font of Mythos. My opponent casts a Noble Hierarch and passes the turn. I draw a Burst Lightning, play my Mountain, and cast Burst Lightning on the Noble Hierarch. (Kill mana producers whenever you have the chance in this matchup!) My opponent plays a second land and passes the turn. I draw an Island, play my Terramorphic Expanse, and pass the turn. My opponent casts an Elvish Archdruid, and I Lightning Bolt the lord at the end of turn and pop my Expanse for another Mountain. I draw a Runeflare Trap for my turn, play another Terramorphic Expanse, and pass the turn. My opponent casts Nissa Revane, searches up a Nissa's Chosen, and passes the turn. I pop my Terramorphic Expanse and use my second Lightning Bolt to kill Nissa during the end step. I draw another Runeflare Trap, play my fourth land, and cast Font of Mythos. My opponent casts Garruk Wildspeaker, makes a Beast, attacks for 2, and passes. I draw a Twincast, Ponder, and a land. I pass the turn after playing my land and use the two Traps and the Twincast to kill my opponent.

I lose the roll and keep Island, Island, Island, Into the Roil, Howling Mine, Lightning Bolt, Twincast. My opponent plays a Crumbling Necropolis and passes the turn. I draw a Terramorphic Expanse, play it, and pass the turn. My opponent plays another land, and I pop the Terramorphic Expanse on his end step. I draw another Island, cast my Howling Mine, and pass the turn. My opponent casts Jace Beleren and makes us both draw a card. I draw another Into the Roil and a Mountain. I play my land, cast Into the Roil on Jace Beleren, and pass the turn. My opponent recasts Jace Beleren and makes us each draw a card. He plays another land and passes the turn. I draw a Runeflare Trap and another Lightning Bolt, play my land, cast Into the Roil on Jace Beleren again, and pass the turn. My opponent plays a land that comes into play tapped, recasts the Jace Beleren, and passes the turn. I cast a Lightning Bolt targetting him on his end step. I draw a Time Warp and a Mountain, cast the Time Warp, and go again. I draw another Time Warp and another Twincast, I play my land, cast the other Time Warp, and go again. I draw Ponder and a land, play my land, and pass the turn. My opponent draws two cards for his turn, activates Jace, cast Blightning, and passes the turn. I cast a Runeflare Trap on his end step, and he goes for Double Negative. I cast both Twincasts on the Runeflare trap and my opponent dies.

Sideboarding: -1 Volcanic Fallout, -3 Burst Lightning, +4 Negate

I keep Mountain, Mountain, Mountain, Mountain, Island, Negate, and Font of Mythos. My opponent plays a land and passes. I draw another Island, play my land, and pass the turn. My opponent plays another land and passes. I draw a Lightning Bolt, play my land, and pass the turn. My opponent plays another land and passes the turn. I cast Lightning Bolt on his end step. I draw a Burst Lightning, play my land, and pass the turn. My opponent plays a fourth land and casts Blightning, I cast Negate. I draw another Font of Mythos, play my land, and cast the first Font of Mythos. My opponent untaps, plays his fifth land, and casts Telemin Performance on me. I get decked, and we move on to Game 3.

Further Sideboarding: -1 Burst Lightning, -3 Time Warp, +4 Double Negative

I mulligan to five and keep Island, Mountain, Howling Mine, Runeflare Trap, and Runeflare Trap. I play my land and pass the turn, and my opponent does the same. I draw a third land and cast Howling Mine. My opponent plays a second land and passes. I draw a Lightning Bolt and a Mountain, play my land, and pass the turn. My opponent plays a third land and casts Blightning, and I discard my land and Lightning Bolt. I draw two lands, play my land, and pass the turn. My opponent plays a fourth land and passes the turn. I draw Font of Mythos and a land.

I think for a bit. If I tap out for the Font of Mythos and my opponent has Telemin Performance, I just lose on the spot. If I pass the turn without a counter in hand and my opponent goes for the Telemin Performance, even though I have lands untapped I still lose. I decide that casting the Font of Mythos and hoping my opponent doesn't have the Telemin Performance in probably the most profitable play. Unfortunately, my opponent has the Telemin Performance and I lose again.

I hope you all enjoyed this week's deck. I had not seen or heard about it until earlier this week, and I'm hoping it's new to all of you as well. The deck does very well in the slower format that Standard is becoming. The deck still struggles a great deal with basic artifact destruction. Luckily, most people are not playing with any special tricks. I'd love to hear your comments in the forums or through email.

Happy brewing!
