No one ever stops playing Magic forever. Despite being off the Pro Tour for several years, Brian Kibler completed his return to glory with his victory at Pro Tour-Austin over Tsuyoshi Ikeda.
A comeback that started in Honolulu reached new heights in Austin thanks to Kibler's amazing run, powered by an Extended Zoo deck built by Hall of Famer Ben Rubin that was finely tuned to combat the horde of other Zoo decks in the field and many of the key combo decks this weekend. Kibler defeated Evangelos Papatsarouchas and his Hypergenesis deck in the quarterfinals by outracing Progenitus and a different Zoo build in the hands of Hunter Burton in the semifinals to set up the final against Pro Tour veteran Ikeda, who was running yet another version of the Zoo deck. The win by Kibler puts his name into serious contention for Hall of Fame consideration next summer, as does Ikeda's continued excellence at the highest levels of the game.
The weekend showcased a new Extended field filled with Zoo variants, Dredge, and multiple combo decks such as Hexmage Depths and Hypergenesis. Austin also featured two Zendikar Booster Drafts, showing off the strategies of the top pros for the new Limited format.
