Setting up the Bombs

At the end of Grand Prix Philadelphia, I went home with all the competitor’s deck lists. There was one question on my (and everyone else’s minds): Do broken rares really influence the Onslaught Sealed format to an unfair degree? I took all the decks, and tallied up the records of deck which played various bombs in the format. These bombs included the five pit fighter legends (Jareth, Arcanis, Visara, Rorix and Silvos), the best morph creatures (Exalted Angel, Quicksilver Dragon, Grinning Demon and Silent Specter), Wrath of God effects (Akroma’s Vengeance and Starstorm), and three other heavy hitters (Insurrection, Butcher Orgg, and Kamahl).

Other cards which might be considered bombs, but were not included in my tallies include Aurification, Glarecaster, Oversold Cemetary, Future Sight, Ravenous Baloth, Hystrodon, Dragon Roost, Tephraderm, Mythic Proportions, Gustcloak Savior, and any uncommons (Slice and Dice, Centaur Glade, and Infest).

In addition, many players claim they’d rather open Sparksmith (the agreed upon best common in the set) than any other card. Included in my numbers were the little red goblin who stood with the big, bad boys.

All decks are broken down as follows:
Name of Card: # of decks (Match Record, % of total possible match points achieved)

Byes were not counted in these stats. These records reflect only the matches actually played during the swiss rounds. Also, these records do not include decks which decided not to play bombs. If a player decided not to run Rorix, Rorix wasn’t counted below.

And without further ado, let the numbers speak for themselves!
