The Magic: The Gathering® Grand Prix tournament series is an international circuit of large-scale Qualifier tournaments featuring cash prizes and multiple invitations to Pro Tour™ events.

To help facilitate transportation to and from the tournament site, Wizards of the Coast has arranged for special shuttle busses departing from Okayama station. These busses will be departing from the #2 stop at Okayama station according to the following schedule.

 TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

Friday, November 21: Trials and registration for Grand Prix—Okayama to be held at the Okayama Shi-min Kaikan, near Okayama station. Registration for Trials will begin at 10:00; registration for the Grand Prix will be held from 16:00-20:00.
Saturday, November 22: Registration from 8:30-9:00 on-site.
Tournament begins at 9:30. If less than 800 players participate in the event, the Top 64 players advance to competition on Sunday. If 800 or more players participate, the Top 128 players advance to Sunday.
Sunday, November 23: The Top 64 (or 128) players begin play at 9:00. After six rounds, the Top 8 will advance to the single-elimination finals to determine the Grand Prix—Okayama champion. See below for a list of additional Public Events scheduled for Sunday.

ENTRY FEE
¥ 3,500 (¥ 4,000 on Saturday)

 TOURNAMENT FORMAT

• Day 1: Sealed Deck (1 Shards of Alara tournament pack+ 2 Shards of Alara booster packs per player)
• Day 2 and Top 8: Booster Draft (3 Shards of Alara booster packs per player)
• Deck lists are required.
• Deck registration and deck swap will be performed for the Sealed Deck portion of the tournament.

TOURNAMENT LENGTH
• Grand Prix—Okayama will be run using Swiss rounds, with 50 minutes per round. Players will receive 5 extra turns after time is called in a round to complete their match.
• The number of Swiss rounds on Day 1 will be determined based on attendance and the number of byes in the tournament, and will be announced at the start of Day 1.
• Day 2 will have 6 Swiss rounds (regardless of the number of players advancing to Day 2) followed by a cut to the Top 8.

ADVANCEMENT
• All players may participate in all Swiss rounds of Day 1.
• If the number of players on Day 1 is 799 or less, the Top 64 players at the end of Day 1 will advance to the second day of competition for prizes and invitations. If the number of players on Day 1 is 800 or more, the Top 128 players will advance to Day 2.
• The Top 8 players after the final Swiss round on Day 2 will advance to the Top 8 single-elimination playoff round.

PLAYOFF ROUND
• Top 8 matches will be best 2-of-3.
• Top 8 matches will have no time limit; however, players are still expected to play at a reasonable pace and complete their matches in a timely manner.
• The Top 8 players will be seated randomly at the draft table immediately prior to drafting. The Top 8 bracket will be determined using this random seating.
• Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will be used to determine final order in the standings.

JUDGES
The Head Judge for Grand Prix—Okayama will be Takeshi Miyasaka (Level 3, Japan).

NOTES
• Grand Prix tournaments have a DCI KValue of 40K.
• Day 1 of the Grand Prix will be run under Rules Enforcement Level: Competitive; Day 2 will be REL: Professional.
• All Universal Tournament Rules and Magic: The Gathering Floor Rules are in effect for this event unless specifically overruled by information in this Format Document.
• Players are expected to bring pen, paper, card sleeves, and appropriate counters for use in play.

INVITATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY

• Grand Prix—Okayama is open to Magic players of all ages.
• The Top 16 players will receive invitations to Pro Tour—Kyoto, scheduled for February 27-March 1, 2009. In the event that a player who wins an invitation to a Pro Tour stop at a Grand Prix has already qualified for an invitation, the invitation does not pass down under any circumstances. Previous qualification may be through a Qualifier tournament, through performance at a professional tournament, or by being an invited DCI player (valid upon the date of the official rank announcement for the appropriate professional tournament).

 PRIZES

• All participants of Grand Prix—Okayama will receive a ¥200 discount coupon valid for any on-demand tournament, as well as a special Call of the Herd premium card (while supplies last).

• Grand Prix—Okayama features a special prize for one lucky participant. Details regarding this prize will be announced immediately prior to Deck Construction on Day 1.
• Top finishers in Grand Prix—Okayama will receive prizes as per the following chart. All prizes are in U.S. dollars.

(Byes are not cumulative throughout the season or year)

Byes will be given to players in the Grand Prix based on the following criteria:
Third-Round Byes
• Players with a Players Club level of 4 or higher.
• Winners of a Grand Prix—Okayama Trial tournament.
• DCI players with a Limited rating of 2000 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on DCI Constructed ratings published on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix (November 19, 2008).
Second-Round Byes
• Players with a Players Club level of 2 or 3.
• DCI players with a Limited rating of 1900 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on DCI Constructed ratings published on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix (November 19, 2008).
First-Round Byes
• Players with a Players Club level of 1.
• DCI players with a Limited rating of 1800 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on DCI Constructed ratings published on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix (November 19, 2008).

GRAND PRIX—OKAYAMA TRIAL TOURNAMENTS
When: Friday, November 21
Registration: November 21, 10:00-14:00
Entry Fee: ¥3,000
Format: Shards of Alara Sealed Deck
Location: Okayama Shi-min Kaikan (not Convex Okayama)

Trials will be run in flights of 32 players throughout the day during the registration time given above. The winner of each 5-round single-elimination Trial will receive a Three-Round bye at the Grand Prix.

Additional trials will be held across Japan in the months before the Grand Prix, each awarding at least a Three-Round bye. For details, please see the Grand Prix—Okayama Trial page.

PRO TOUR—KYOTO QUALIFIER TOURNAMENTS
When: Sunday, November 23
Registration: Saturday, November 22, 17:00 – end of last round; Sunday, November 23, 8:30-9:00
Entry Fee: ¥3,500
Format: Shards of Alara Sealed Deck + Booster Draft

Three 64-person Qualifier tournaments will be held at Grand Prix—Okayama. The winner of the Qualifier tournament will receive an invitation and travel to Pro Tour—Kyoto, scheduled for February 27-March 1, 2009. Booster packs will also be awarded to top finishers.

SHARDS OF ALARA UNCUT SHEET SEALED TOURNAMENT
When: Sunday, November 23
Registration: November 23, 9:00-9:30
Entry Fee: ¥2500
Format: Shards of Alara Sealed Deck

The winner of the Uncut Sheet tournament will receive a special uncut sheet of foil Japanese Shards of Alara rare cards, straight from the factory. Other top finishers will receive Shards of Alara boosters.

SUPER GRAND PRIX TRIAL
When: Sunday, November 23
Registration: November 23, 9:00-9:30
Entry Fee: ¥1000
Format: Extended

The Top 4 players of the Super Grand Prix Trial will each earn a 3-round bye for the first domestic Grand Prix in 2009 (details to be announced later). In addition, the winner will earn a travel award and lodging for the Grand Prix, as well as free entry into the Grand Prix. (Travel award is subject to attendance; the amount of the travel award will be determined by Wizards of the Coast based on round-trip travel from the winner's nearest rail station or airport to the main station of the city the Grand Prix will be held in and is non-transferable. Lodging shall be at a hotel of Wizards' choice; booking will include paid room and room tax only for three nights beginning the day before the Grand Prix. All expenses not listed above are the responsibility of the player.)

OKAYAMA LEGACY CHAMPIONSHIP

Format: Legacy

The winner of the Legacy tournament will receive an uncut sheet of Antiquities U1 cards. The finalist will receive an uncut sheet of Antiquities U2 and common cards. Other top finishers will receive booster packs from various past expansions.

THE FINALS SUPER SPECIAL QUALIFIER
When: Sunday, November 23
Registration: November 23, 9:30-10:00
Entry Fee: ¥1000
Format: Standard

The Top 8 finishers in the Special Qualifier will receive an invitation to The Finals Championship, to be held December 27-28 in Tokyo, with the winer receiving a travel award. For details on The Finals and Special Qualifiers, please see the Tournament Center at mtg.takaratomy.co.jp.
