Magic: The Gathering® Pro Tour™–Kyoto 2008 Qualifier
November 29-30, 2008

The Magic: The Gathering® Grand Prix tournament series is an international circuit of large-scale Qualifier tournaments featuring cash prizes and multiple invitations to Pro Tour™ events.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT AND SCHEDULE

The format for Grand Prix–Taipei is Shards of AlaraTM Block Limited, with Day 2 Booster Draft. All DCITM Limited -format rules, Magic® Floor Rules, and all subsequent updates will be enforced.

Friday, November 28: Onsite registration is from 03:00 –08:00 P.M.
Saturday, November 29: Late registration from 08:00 – 09:00 A.M. Tournament begins at 09:30 A.M. If less than 800 players participate in the event, the Top 64 players advance to competition on Sunday If 800 or more players participate, the top 128 advance to Sunday.
Sunday, November 30: The Top 64 (or 128) players begin play at 9:00 A.M.

TOURNAMENT

Divisions
The main tournament at Grand Prix–Taipei is open to Magic players of all ages.

  • Head Judge
    The Head Judge for Grand Prix–Taipei will be Jacky Yang, Level 3 from Taiwan.
  • Tournament Structure
    The structure for Grand Prix–Taipei will be modified Swiss-style (50-minute rounds), with the Top 64 players (or 128 if 800 or more players registered for the main event) advancing to the second day of competition for prizes and invitations.
  • Tournament Divisions and Prizes
    All participants in the Grand Prix will receive a Call of the Herd exclusive Grand Prix foil card, while supplies last

Pro Tour Invitations
The Top 16 previously uninvited players will each win an invitation to Pro Tour–Kyoto. Grand Prix invitations no longer pass down to previously uninvited players. The top 16 finishers will receive invitations even if one or more of those players already possesses an invitation.

Tournament Byes (Byes are not cumulative throughout the season or year)

Byes will be given to players in the Grand Prix based on the following criteria:

Third-Round Byes

  • Pro Player club level 4 and above.
  • DCI players with a Limited rating of 2000 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on the player's DCI Limited rating on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix.

Second-Round Byes

  • Pro Player club level 2 or 3
  • DCI players with a Limited rating of 1900 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on the player's DCI Limited rating on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix.

First-Round Byes

  • Players with a Players Club level of 1
  • DCI players with a Limited rating of 1800 or higher. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Byes are based on the player's DCI Limited rating on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix.

  • All Universal Tournament Rules and Magic: the Gathering Floor Rules are in effect for this event unless specifically overruled by information in this Format Document
  • Players must bring pen, paper, card sleeves and appropriate counters.

Friday, November 28

  • Grand Prix–Taipei Trials (Full List of Trials)
    Trials start at 10:00 A.M., 12:00 P.M., 2:00 P.M., and 4:00 P.M. Registration closes 15 minutes prior to each Trial. Trial starts as soon as 32 players is fill up. Maximum 32 players per Trial, single-elimination. Trial starts as soon as 32 players is fill up. The top finisher receives a third-round bye at Grand Prix–Taipei and one display of Shards of Alara™ boosters. The format is Shards of Alara- Block Sealed Deck.

  • "Super" Friday Night Magic Tournament (Limited Sealed Shards of Alara )
    Event starts at 1:00 P.M. Registration closes 12:45 P.M. Swiss tournament with cut to top-8 single-elimination.

    Participation Prize – All players each receive 1 August 2008 FNM promo card
    1st place wins 1 Free Entry into any Side Event at Grand Prix Taipei 2008
    1st place wins 8 FNM promo cards (Choose from 2007-2008 card pool on site)
    2nd place wins 4 FNM promo cards (Choose from 2007-2008 card pool on site)
    3rd / 4th place wins 3 FNM promo cards (Choose from 2007-2008 card pool on site)

    Event s start from 3P.M. Eight-person single-elimination booster draft tournament

    2nd place wins 2 FNM promo cards (Choose from 2006-2007 card pool on site)
    Cost: Draft NTD400

  • On Demand Tournaments
    Eight-person single-elimination, on-demand tournaments will be offered throughout the weekend. Costs: Constructed NTD250, Draft NTD350, Sealed NTD650

Sunday, November 30

  • Pro Tour– Kyoto Qualifier
    Registration closes at 9:45 A.M.; play begins at 10:00 A.M. The winner qualifies for Pro Tour - Kyoto and wins Airfare to Pro Tour - Kyoto. * The format is Shards of Alara Sealed Deck. Cost: NTD 750

  • Standard Tournament
    Registration closes at 11:45 A.M.; play begins at 12:00 P.M. Swiss tournament with cut to top-8 single-elimination.
    The top-16 wins Shards of Alara Boosters
    Maximum players – 80. Cost: NTD 250

  • On Demand Tournaments
    Eight-person single-elimination, on-demand tournaments will be offered throughout the weekend. Costs: Constructed NTD250, Draft NTD350, Sealed NTD650
