As battle flared across the valley floor, Nalun helped Talik back to his feet. The moggs that had cornered young Talik lay dead with twin snake-bone darts in their throats. Talik mentally thanked Gaea once more for Nalun's incredible aim as he retrieved the darts for his uncle.

The two elves were part of a rebel unit outnumbered two to one by moggs and Stronghold soldiers. Despite their few numbers, the rebels were proving more than a match for Crovax's brutal search-and-destroy squadron.

  "This is too easy," Nalun said sourly. He accepted the darts from Talik and wiped them clean of mogg blood. "These thick-skulled brutes never travel in packs of less than thirty."

A distant mogg let out a piercing shriek. Crovax's thugs broke off and withdrew from the elvish and Vec rebels and reformed a short distance away. A massive, rock-encrusted monster rose from behind a foothill and lumbered onto the battlefield. Vaguely humanoid in shape, it stood at least twenty feet tall with a patchwork of armored plates for skin. Vicious, hollow spikes protruded from its torso.

Stronghold soldiers and moggs fell into formation behind the creature, flanking it from a safe distance. The rebels also regrouped, refusing to quit the field.

"It's a laccolith," Nalun hissed to Talik. "Get up that ridge. Now!"
