The Keldons' first target is Kinymu, a member of the Kipamu League. The initial raids are short and brutal: Keldons destroy entire villages, rout the defending troops, and take large numbers of hostages. Latulla orders construction of a permanent Keldon settlement to begin on Jamuraan soil, and the league desperately masses its soldiers and weapons near the settlement site to keep the raiders contained. Without a strong central commander, however, the league suffers loss after loss as Latulla tightens her grip on the coastline. The Keldons even go so far as to begin a basic mining operation to steal the league's resources for their own. Meanwhile, Latulla continues to take hostages, and retains the services of Greel, a twisted, grinning mockery of a man whose life-draining powers both fuel Latulla's artifacts and terrorize her enemies.
