Opening Salvo: Pt. 1
1939-1945 Set
by Robert Mull

The new Axis and Allies Miniatures: 1939-1945 Starter Set and boosters hit store shelves on October 26th. This new set has some of the best units from our previous sets, but that doesn't mean there aren't some surprises in store. This week we take a look at a pair of tanks whose models will be familar to almost everyone, but whose stat cards are sure to provoke discussion. Enough talk, let's get to the previews.

Canadian Sherman VC 17-Pounder

At first glance this appears to be a Sherman VC Firefly for the Canadians. The speed, defense and attack ratings for this unit are exactly the same as the Firefly, but that's where the similarities end. This Canadian version costs 2 points less than its British cousin. Two points saved on a heavy hitting tank like this gives you two points to spend on something else in your war band. It's not just a cheaper Firefly though, it also packs a killer punch with its Armor-Piercing Rounds special ability. More firepower and lower cost makes for a unit that's sure to be included in many Allied war bands.

German Panzer IV Ausf. F2

We have seen the Ausf. F2 before as the SS-Panzer IV Ausf. F2. How does this new F2 compare to the SS-F2? The stats of the two tanks are identical, where they vary is in their point costs and special abilities. The SS variant costed in at 32 points, where this "stock" version weighs in at a relatively light 22 points. For this cost reduction the new F2 loses the SS Determination and Battlefield Awareness special abilities that the SS variant has. What you get in return is a 22 point Panzer IV and that sounds like a good match-up for any Sherman and a likely inclusion in many Axis war bands.

Check back next Friday when we will be focusing on a new pair of units from the 1939-1945 Set. Until then, go to our message boards to talk about this preview.
