S2 Briefing: 1942 Allied Units
J.R. "Careos" Sharp

As World War II progressed, technological advancements were made faster than production could implement them at times. After learning from shortcomings in their early war production armor, countries sought out new weapons to outclass those of years past.

The new tanks of the era were faster, stronger and heavier armored than their early war counterparts. Armored combat became more and more frequent, as both sides constantly looked to gain the upper hand through research.

Represented in this time period are some of the more famous tanks of the war. Such vehicles as the M4 Sherman, Panzer VI Tiger and Panzer V Panther started appearing on the front lines, forever changing the face of modern warfare.

Once both sides committed to this sort of warfare, the earlier tanks such as the M3 Stuart and Panzer III's were delegated to a support role or were to be modified for other forms of weapons.

KV-1

Combat Role:
Heavy Assault Tank / Infantry Assault Tank.

Weakness:
Reduced speed, somewhat weaker against heavy armor.

Threat to Enemy:
With an armor value of 6, the KV-1 is one of the heavier Allied tanks. The KV-1 has several abilities that make it stronger than its base values. It's ability to ignore it's first damage counter as well as transport an infantry unit to the front for support creates one of the most formidable Allied tanks in the game.

Favored Target:
Light and medium armor at all ranges. Heavy armor at short and medium range. Infantry at all ranges.

Supporting Units:
Anti-Infantry Support: M4A1 Sherman, M3 Stuart, Infantry via Transport
Anti-Vehicle Support: M4A1 Sherman, T-34/76

Effects from Loss:
Moderate. With a cost of 32, the KV-1 is one of the higher priced allied tanks. Losing this tank could prove very detrimental to your success, depending on your squad setup.

Deployment Strategy:
Deploy this unit on a road if possible to make up for its 3 speed. Getting to the objective first is not a main concern for the KV-1. Instead use the KV-1 to cover an advance by attempting to tie up and delay your opponent's units going for the objective. Another deployment choice is to utilize the transport ability to give the infantry an additional 3-4 hexes of movement and then begin your assault.

M3 Lee

Combat Role:
Medium Support Tank / Infantry Assault Tank

Weakness:
Fails cover rolls. Cannot attack heavy armor with main gun. If attacking with sponson cannon, target must be in front of vehicle.

Threat to Enemy:
Ability to attack with main values, then additionally attack with 12/10/8 at frontal target, then move 1 hex with strike and fade.

Favored Target:
Light armor at all ranges. Medium armor at short and medium range. Infantry at all ranges.

Supporting Units:
Anti-Infantry Support: M4A1 Sherman, KV-1, M3 Stuart
Anti-Vehicle Support: M4A1 Sherman, KV-1, T-34/76

Effects from Loss:
Moderate: Like the KV-1, the M3 Lee is one of the pricer tanks in the allied arsenal. By losing its double attack ability as well as strike and fade you could have a difficult time if there are multiple enemy units still on the field.

Deployment Strategy:
As with the KV-1, the M3 Lee should be deployed forward on a road to make up for it's slower speed. Once in position, the M3 Lee is able to essentially make an attack on a lightly armored vehicle such as a Sd Kfz 222 followed by an attack on a larger target. Given this, in addition to it's strike and fade ability, it can prove to be an unwanted irritant to your opponent.

M4A1 Sherman

Combat Role:
Medium Support Tank / Infantry Assault Tank

Weakness:
Easily destroyed by heavier tanks in direct combat. No special abilities.

Threat to Enemy:
Low cost unit with decent attacks. Considered to be the best all around unit in the game, able to swarm and outflank heavier tanks.

Favored Target:
Light armor at all ranges. Medium armor at short and medium range. Infantry at all ranges.

Supporting Units:
Anti-Infantry Support: M4A1 Sherman, KV-1, M3 Stuart, M3 Lee
Anti-Vehicle Support: M4A1 Sherman, KV-1, T-34/76

Effects from Loss:
Minor. The M4A1 is able to be deployed in groups of 4, still having points left over for a fair share of infantry. Given this, the loss of a single M4A1 only decreases your threat to the enemy by a small margin.

Deployment Strategy:
Before deploying, study your map and your surroundings. Plan out your moves in advance to place your Sherman(s) in the best places to pin down heavy German armor. Remember, tanks such as the Tiger and Panther are very vulnerable to their rear. If you are able to get all of your M4A1's in LOS on your first phase, you should do well. Depending on how many deployed, use 1 or 2 to fire on the German tank while the others continue their movement to the rear. The cleaner you are able to execute these maneuvers and plan ahead, will assist your outcome in mastering the “Sherman Swarm”.

T-70 Model 1942

Combat Role:
Medium Support Tank

Weakness:
Overall low attacks for 1942. Cannot fire while disrupted.

Threat to Enemy:
Having a movement speed of 5, the T-70 is able to be fielded in swarm type squads to gain an additional speed edge.

Favored Target:
Light armor at all ranges. Medium armor at short and medium range.

Supporting Units:
Anti-Infantry Support: M4A1 Sherman, KV-1, M3 Stuart, M3 Lee
Anti-Vehicle Support: M4A1 Sherman, KV-1, T-34/76

Effects from Loss:
Minor. The T-70 is a low cost unit that should be primarily used in support roles. Provided you have several units on the field, the loss of this unit will only inhibit your mobility.

Deployment Strategy:
The T-70 is not a proficient front-line tank. The best role for this tank would be to cover the flanks of your more able tanks. If a situation arises that your main force can lose LOS to the enemy, use the T-70 to bridge that gap. While it's attacks are not strong enough for toe to toe combat, it could perhaps delay your enemy enough to either save one of your heavier tanks or assist in putting them in better position for a kill-shot.
