Kevin
Kulp's current group has been active in the same campaign since
1992. During that time, roughly 200 games, the PCs have gone from
1st level up to about 15th level. One of the group members has been
playing a psionicist since day one, and other psionic characters
and NPCs have come and gone as well. Profiled in Dragon
magazine during the 3rd Edition D&D playtesting
period, the group has had a wonderful time thrashing out inconsistencies
and balance issues in the new rules. "We started
out with the original Complete Psionicists Handbook
for 2nd edition to create TomTom Badgerclaw, halfling psionicist
and city rogue. TomTom was never what you'd call a proper thief;
he didn't pick pockets, he'd destabilize economies. When the Skills
and Powers version of psionics came out, we quickly switched
over despite some flaws with the system. I've often wondered how
extensively those systems were playtested; we've never been entirely
happy with them, due to some balance problems. When we started playtesting
3rd Edition D&D in 1998, TomTom presented us with a real
problem. What to do with a core character in the new system? We
ended up "freezing" TomTom's psionic abilities for almost
a year and a half, which wasn't much of a solution at all. Playtesting
the new psionics rules was something we had been looking forward
to for a long time."
