Appendix d12: Lolth's Gifts
By Jason Sholtis

With the Rise of the Underdark campaign underway, this year has seen its share of drow incursions against the surface world—playing out right now in both the current D&D Encounters season and D&D Lair Assault. Add to that, the upcoming release of Menzoberranzan: City of Intrigue, and it’s highly possible that your campaign will soon be venturing into the Underdark.

To help DMs add further detail to their adventures underground, Jason Sholtis (of The Dungeon Dozen) has provided the following tables—in the spirit of the 1st Edition DMG’s appendices, charts, and random encounters!

Strange Gifts from the Demon Queen of Spiders

In this week’s table, how the illithid occupy their time when not otherwise occupied by fiendishly mind blasting adventurers…

d12

  1. Blind zealotry: the so-affected shriek their allegiance to Lolth at any opportunity, proselytize relentlessly, howl with mad laughter at the foolishness of heretics, fight without thought of surrender or retreat, wouldn't dream of committing the slightest transgression.

  2. Enhanced leaping ability as jumping spider.

  3. Pedipalps in addition to standard limb arrangement (handy for freaking out guests at the dinner table, if little else).

  4. Skin covered with harpoon-like barbs for clinging to any surface.

  5. Stench of the Abyss: certainly sets one apart from one’s peers, indescribable to those unfamiliar with the nightmare plane; regardless, a badge of honor.

  6. Eight eyes, six of which see into different planes of the Abyss at all times.

  7. Full-on spider-face complete with poison-dripping fangs, 360 degree vision, and enhanced senses.

  8. Spinnerets in abdomen: produce multi-purpose webbing of varying stickiness and tensile strength.

  9. Vestigial spider limbs: generally concealed beneath clerical robes, useful only as an irrefutable demonstration of loyalty.

  10. Tough fibrous spider hide: unsightly but provides enhancement to Armor Class.

  11. Ability to transform into a small spider once/daily.

  12. Arachnid mind: enhanced comprehension of spatial relationships, friend-or-foe detection at range, sense weaknesses.
