Dungeons & Dragons College Tour 2000

Quest’s End!

After a month and a half trekking across the United States, the Dungeons & Dragons "Find Yourself Somewhere Else" College Tour staff have come home and begun unpacking their adventuring gear. But tales of their exploits and the exciting times that they enjoyed with you while on the road have already begun to spread through the halls of Wizards of the Coast.

The turnout of interested adventurers, both grizzled veterans and fresh-faced newcomers, was very encouraging, and the success of the tour stop events definitely keyed upon the enthusiasm that our attendees brought to the Big White Tent.

For those of you who have yet to hear the legends, the Dungeons & Dragons College Tour 2000 took our celebration of the release of the new D&D game directly to the colleges of the Midwest. Spanning 10 colleges during September and October, the tour showcased Dungeons & Dragons for those who had never played while bringing together long-time players to renew their love for the game and introduce them to fellow gamers. (For more background information, see our tour announcement.)

Word of the new D&D game and the tour supporting it spread across college campuses, local hangouts, diners, bookstores, clubs, and dorms thanks to local fliers, newspaper ads, and radio spots. The true test, however, came at each event day when hundreds of new faces arrived at the tour's big-top tent, eager to see what the fuss was about and, most importantly, to play.

And play they did! The tour offered a number of different entertainment options for new and old players alike, including:

  • "Choose Your Destiny" storytelling environments, where players met with archetypal representatives of each character class and determined which adventuring lifestyle best suited their personality;
  • Demonstration games of the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Game boxed set, in which the players got a taste of the new game in an original scenario created for the tour;
  • Interactive computer kiosks offering tutorials on the new rules;
  • Meet-and-greets with college game clubs and local game store owners;
  • Free giveaways, including Dungeons & Dragons T-shirts, key chains, cups, and bottle openers; and
  • A sweepstakes contest to win a trip for two to the castles of Europe, signed copies of the new Monster Manual, and more!
