Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix come back to China after six years. Don’t hesitate to take part in the exciting event and get a cool foil Maelstrom Pulse promo card. There are plenty of public events, artist session and other hall attractions for players of all interests and skill levels. Shanghai, a vigorous and energetic international metropolis, welcomes people from all over the world to enjoy its special atmosphere. This modern metropolis with its rich heritage of ancient Chinese culture offers half-understood, semi-mythical images and has much to see and do. Shanghai very well may be the most evocative city in all of China for an outsider to visit.

The Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix tournament series is a great reason to get out of the house, catch up with old friends, meet some new ones, and play Magic. Grand Prix tournaments are world-wide open events that allow all Magic players to participate and experience the thrill of a large-scale competition. In addition to $30,000 in cash prizes, Pro Tour invitations for the top 16 finishers, and exclusive foil promo cards for participants, Grand Prix feature a host of other activities, including public events and artist signings (prizes subject to change). Registration and Schedule

  • Friday, August 19: Registration – 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 20: Registration – 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Saturday, August 20: Tournament begins at 10 a.m.
  • Sunday, August 21: Day Two begins at 9 a.m.

The main tournament at Grand Prix Shanghai is open to Magic players of all ages.

Tournament Format

  • Day 1: Sealed Deck (6 booster packs of Magic 2012, either Chinese or English chose by player)
  • Day 2 and Top 8: Booster Draft (3 English booster packs)
  • If product is not stamped or preregistered, deck registration and deck swap will be performed for the Swiss Sealed Deck.

Tournament Structure

  • Modified Swiss-style (50-minute rounds).
  • Rules Enforcement Level (REL) is Competitive (Day 1) and Professional (Day 2)
  • If 799 or fewer players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 64 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
  • If 800 or more players register for the event, all players with an X-2-0 or better record OR the top 128 players—whichever number is greater—will advance to the second day of the event.
  • The Top 8 players after the final Swiss round on Day 2 will advance to the Top 8 single-elimination finals.
  • The Top 8 players will be seated randomly at the draft table immediately prior to drafting. The Top 8 bracket will be determined using this random seating.
  • Top 8 playoff matches will be best 2 of 3, and have no time limit. (Players are still expected to play at a normal pace and complete playoff matches in a reasonable amount of time.)
  • Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will still be used to determine final order in the standings.

  • Planeswalker Points multiplier 8x, 40K, Rules Enforcement Level (REL) is Competitive (Day 1) and Professional (Day 2)
  • The Magic: The Gathering Tournament Rules and the Magic: The Gathering Infraction Procedure Guide are in effect for this event unless specifically overruled by information in this Format Document. Rules documents can be found in the Magic Document Center.
  • Players must bring pen, paper, card sleeves and appropriate counters.
  • In the event that a player who wins an invitation to a Pro Tour stop at a Grand Prix has already qualified for an invitation, the invitation does not pass down under any circumstances. Previous qualification may be through a Qualifier tournament, through performance at a professional tournament, or by being an invited DCI player (valid upon the date of the official rank announcement for the appropriate professional tournament).


 

Tournament Byes

 Grand Prix Trials  

Last-Chance Trials: Friday, August 19
Format: Magic 2012 Sealed Deck, 32-person single-elimination flights
Times: Noon - 7 p.m., with new flights starting every 32 players. Last trial starts at 7 p.m.
Registration: 11:45 a.m. - 6:45 p.m.
Prizes: 1st place: 3-round bye at Grand Prix Shanghai and 36 Magic 2012 booster packs.
Cost: CNY 150

Other Grand Prix Shanghai Trials will be run throughout the APAC region in the weeks leading up to the Grand Prix. Each offers at least 1 three-round bye to Grand Prix Shanghai.

Byes will be given to players in the Grand Prix based on the following criteria (Byes are not cumulative throughout the season or year. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. Players that accumulate multiple byes to a particular Grand Prix tournament receive only the bye for the greatest number of rounds):

Third-Round Byes

  • Players with a Players Club level of 4 or higher
  • Players with a DCI Total rating of 2050 or higher. Byes are based on DCI Total ratings published on August 17, 2011.
  • Winners of Grand Prix Shanghai Trial tournaments.

Second-Round Byes

  • Players with a Players Club level of 2 or 3
  • Players with a DCI Total rating of 1950 or higher. Byes are based on DCI Total ratings published on August 17, 2011.

First-Round Byes

  • Players with a Players Club level of 1
  • Players with a DCI Total rating of 1850 or higher. Byes are based on DCI Total ratings published on August 17, 2011.

Trial winners
People who win a Trial event are awarded 3 byes in the Grand Prix that it feeds. Trial byes are not cumulative with other byes and do not pass down.

Other Hall Attractions

Lucky Draw
Each attendance of public events at Grand Prix Shanghai receives one raffle ticket for M2012 Foil Set. Lucky draw will be performed at 8:30 P.M. on Sunday, August 21st. Winner must be on site to receive the prize.

Trading
Although trading is both allowed and encouraged, please note that the following things are not permitted at this event:

  • Buying/selling cards with anyone except for our authorized dealer(s)
  • Soliciting to buy/sell cards elsewhere
  • Advertising without receiving permission from Wizards of the Coast’s on-site Event Manager
  • Utilizing an excessive amount of space when trading
  • Using suitcases, handcarts, luggage carts, etc. for the purpose of transporting excessive amounts of trade stock.

Please note that failure to obey these rules may result in all involved parties being both removed from the event without refund, and banned from attending future events.

Entry VISA

Foreign visitors have to obtain an entry VISA before entering China. You may apply for the VISA in Consulate of P.R. China in your country. You may also contact your local travel agency for more details.

Travel to Shanghai

Shanghai serves as an important air, railway, road and water transport hub in eastern China. The frequent flights, trains and buses make tourists' travel to Shanghai a breeze. The convenient taxis, buses, subway trains etc. can take you to any corner of the city.

By Air
There are two International Airports in Shanghai: Hong Qiao (SHA) and Pu Dong (PVG). Most of international flights from nearly 200 cities all over the world are handled by Pu Dong International Airport. Both of these two airports have two Terminal Towers and enjoy convenient transportation links with the center of Shanghai.

Pu Dong International Airport(PVG): 40km away from downtown. You may take Metro Line 2 or any of 8 airport bus lines to downtown from Pu Dong International Airport.

Hong Qiao International Airport(SHA): 10km away from Shanghai Mart. You may take Metro Line 10 to Shanghai Mart.

By Train
There are four Railway Station in Shanghai. So please note which station your train arrives or starts off. All of the stations are not far away from downtown and connected with at least one metro line.

Shanghai West Railway Station: Metro Line 11
Shanghai South Railway Station: Metro Line 1 and 3
Shanghai Hong Qiao Railway Station: Metro Line 10

Transportation to the venue

By Metro
Shanghai's eleven subway lines have connections all over the city, with stops at or nearby the main attractions and commercial areas. You may transfer between lines easily. If you avoid rush hours of 7:00 to 9:30 A.M. and 4:30 to 7:30 P.M., the subway will provide you with fast and comfortable service.

Metro Line 10 may take you to Shanghai Mart. Get off the train at Yi Li Road Station. Turn right after you get out of the station from Exit 4. After 5 minutes walk, you may see Shanghai Mart at your right side behind the elevated road.

By Taxi/Car
Shanghai Mart sits next to Yan'An Elevated Road. Exit from Lou Shan Guan Road Exit of Yan'An Elevated Road and go straight to the side road. Shanghai Mart is at your right hand.

Parking
Garage of Shanghai Mart is open 24 hours. Charge of parking is CNY 10 per hour.
