Duels of the Planeswalkers Decks

Hands of Flame – The Chandra Nalaar Deck

Impulsive, passionate, and short-tempered, Chandra Nalaar is as ready to explode as the pyromantic spells of her ever-growing repertoire. Chandra's spark ignited when she was still quite young. As she has grown, so has her ability to wield spells of fiery destruction.

Th is deck is packed with small, aggressive creatures. Attack early and often to constantly put your opponent on the defensive. Sometimes you have to just forget about blocking and turn up the heat. As long as you have at least 1 life, you are a threat to end the duel at any moment with an X-spell like Blaze, Banefire, or Enrage.

It can be tempting to unload your awesome damage spells like Shock and Incinerate on your hapless opponent. However, remember that clearing the way by destroying opposing creatures can often lead to more effi cient damage-dealing. Spells only hit once, but your creatures can attack every turn, especially when your opponent is defenseless!

Some of your creatures, like Prodigal Pyromancer and Kamahl, Pit Fighter, can deal damage through the use of their abilities without ever attacking at all. These creatures especially stand out with a Furnace of Rath on the battlefield!

Teeth of the Predator – the Garruk Wildspeaker Deck

Garruk Wildspeaker is a hunter to the core, a planeswalking predator whose hunting ground is the entire Multiverse. Gripped with a need to test his might and resolve against greater and greater challenges, his life's calling has become an endless hunt of the most ferocious and dangerous game that each plane can offer.

As you begin your duel, focus on getting Forests onto the battlefield and applying pressure with your creatures. Th is green deck's creatures are typically larger than your opponent's, so be aggressive. Soon, you'll be summoning heavy hitters like Duskdale Wurm and Verdant Force.

If the sheer size of your forces isn't enough to overwhelm your opponent, take your attack to the next level with Overrun. This devastating sorcery not only enlarges your creatures temporarily, but also gives them trample for the turn. In fact, trample is an important part of your strategy. Give any of your creatures trample and more with Loxodon Warhammer, an impressive Equipment that makes a small creature enormous and a large creature downright gargantuan! Plus the lifelink it grants keeps your life total comfortably high, on the off chance your battered opponent can muster a counterattack.

Thoughts of the Wind – The Jace Beleren Deck

As a specialist in mind magic, Jace Beleren uses his abilities to gaze into the minds of others, uncovering their closely guarded secrets. Even before his Planeswalker spark ignited, his curiosity helped him to discover the existence of Planeswalkers and of worlds beyond his own, opening his eyes to an even greater scope of secrets.

While other decks rely on direct aggression and confrontation, this deck prefers a more elusive approach. Many of your creatures have flying, allowing them to attack unaffected by creatures saddled by gravity, and Phantom Warrior simply can't be blocked at all! Th e captain of your aerial assault is Mahamoti Djinn, a renowned force throughout the Multiverse.

What really distinguishes this deck from its rivals are its twin defensive strategies of countermagic and "bounce," or returning permanents to their owner's hand. Th e threats you'll face are as varied as the planes themselves, but Cancel can stop them all. If danger does appear when your guard is down, simply use Boomerang or Unsummon to send it away from the battlefield, often setting up a Cancel for when it tries to return!

Ears of the Elves – The Nissa Revane Deck

The sternly beautiful Nissa Revane is a proud and ruthless naturemage. She seeks to prove that her people, the elves, are the true heirs and best stewards of the planes of the Multiverse. She wields green magic to muster her people and amplify their might. But recently she has begun using black mana covertly, believing it a necessary means to move the elves toward their rightful place.

Th is deck's creatures feature a diverse set of abilities that ensure you have access to more resources than your opponent. Elvish Visionary keeps your hand full, Greenweaver Druid lets you accelerate your mana base, Elvish Eulogist keeps you at a healthy life total, and Lys Alana Huntmaster brings an almost endless supply of reinforcements—every Elf spell you cast gives you another Elf! With so many Elves dedicated to Nissa's fi ght, you may quickly find yourself with many more creatures than your opponent.

Eliminate key opposing creatures with Eyeblight's Ending or Essence Drain, and your opponent will soon be scrambling to put up an eff ective defense. Elvish victory—Nissa's victory—is inevitable. Get started!

Eyes of Shadow – The Liliana Vess Deck

As Liliana Vess neared the limits of her human lifespan, her health and power were waning. She contacted powerful demon lords, and one dark deal later, she was restored to her height of power and beauty. Her specialty is necromantic sorcery, combined with insanity-inducing mental assaults.

Th e highlight of this deck is a punishing suite of discard spells, from the efficient Ravenous Rats to the boundless Mind Shatter. Whatever threats manage to enter the battlefi eld should be easily dispatched with spells like Terror and Consume Spirit.

Your creatures take advantage of three powerful abilities: fl ying, fear, and regeneration. Flying renders larger foes helpless as your forces pass by overhead. Fear, a long-time staple of black's arsenal, also makes your creatures difficult to block by infusing them with black magic so potent that only other black creatures or soulless artifact creatures dare stand in their way. Finally, regeneration allows you to manipulate death itself. For a single black mana, you can prevent the stalwart Drudge Skeletons or the predatory Mortivore from being destroyed.
