Factoids for Grand Prix Sapporo

  • Sapporo is the fifth largest city in Japan with a population of 1.8 million.
  • Sapporo is the home of Japanese beer and is famous for it's corn, crab and potatoes.
  • Grand Prix Sapporo is being held in the Sapporo beer factory, which has a museum where you can sample the beer.
  • The tournament location also has an 11-screen multiplex movie theatre, an IMAX movie theatre and a Toys-R-Us toystore.
  • Sapporo is the first Grand Prix to be held in the northernmost island of Japan, Hokkaido.
  • There have been five Grand Prix events in Japan: Tokyo, Kyoto, Tohoku, Kyushu and Nagoya.
  • Magic is very popular in Japan-GP Tokyo had 1200 participants and GP Nagoya was the largest team event to date, with over 200 teams.
  • Japan has many Pro Tour players, with Masaya Mori (the only two time continental champion, top 16 at Pro Tour Chicago 99) and Satoshi Nakamura (98 APAC Champion, 98 Magic Invitational participant, top 32 at Pro Tour London and top 32 at Worlds 2000) leading the pack.
  • Japan has two players who have each won two Grand Prix tournaments. Ken'ichi Fujita won GP Tokyo and GP Taiwan 1999. Tadayoshi Komiya won GP Taipei 2000 and GP Kyushu.
  • The most famous landmark in Sapporo is the Bell Tower, which is over 120 years old. The bell can be heard for 3 miles.
  • VIP guests include artists Ron Spencer and Mark Tedin, as well as R&D member Mons Johnson, who is famous for Mon's Goblins Raiders.
  • Sapporo is home to the TCG Superstore, Future Bee, which sponsors many Japanese players including Itaru Ishida (highest place finish for a Japanese player at a Pro Tour, 13th at Pro Tour Los Angeles in 98).
  • Head Judge for Sapporo is Takashi Aida, who is one of only two level three judges in Japan.
